Mother-of-pearl is aragonite laid down in sheets a few hundred nanometres thick with protein between them. Every boundary reflects a little, and the pale wash you see is the sum of hundreds of those reflections rather than one bright patch. A button is cut straight out of the shell, so this is the same material with the shape taken off a lathe.
